Fatal Fire in Otsego County

State Police in conjunction with the Otsego county and state fire investigation teams are investigating a fatal structure fire that occurred Saturday morning in the village of Richfield Springs.

At around 7 am Saturday, fire departments from Richfield Springs, Schuyler Lake, Winfield, Springfield and Cedarville responded to the residential fire. Firefighters made several attempts but could not save 59-year-old Mary Weingates, the sole occupant of the Walnut Street residence.

Weingates was a popular science teacher in the Richfield Springs Central School District.
