Grabbing a chocolate milk box for the lunch bag this week? Check the code first. Horizon Organic has recalled specific cartons of its shelf-stable 1% chocolate milk, which were sold in grocery stores nationwide, including New York.

The recall covers more than 50,000 cases distributed to grocery stores across the country, including retailers here in New York. Horizon posted its recall notice on August 7, and the FDA's enforcement database also lists the product, flagging it for the potential to spoil before its printed date. According to Horizon's notice about the recall, the trigger was a wave of consumer complaints describing cartons that looked bloated and milk that tasted, smelled, or looked off.

Here's the thing: it's not like this hit one region and skipped the rest. Horizon sold these cartons everywhere, so there's no logic to "well my grocery store probably wasn't affected." If you buy the shelf-stable stuff, the boxes that live in the pantry instead of the fridge until you open them, go check what's actually sitting on that shelf.

• 12-pack, UPC 742365002700: Best By dates of Jan. 28, Jan. 30, Jan. 31, Feb. 1, Feb. 2 or Feb. 3, 2027
• 18-pack, UPC 742365208867: Best By dates of Jan. 31, Feb. 1 or Feb. 2, 2027

Both are the 8-ounce, shelf-stable cartons, the exact kind that ends up in a lunchbox or a diaper bag without anybody thinking twice.
