Music fans may know him best as a banjo player, multi-instrumentalist and Avett Brothers member, but Scott Avett is a visual artist, too. In fact, he has designed several album covers for the group -- including the artwork for their new release, Closer Than Together -- and he holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from East Carolina University.

Now, Avett is showcasing his work as a visual artist in a new solo exhibition at the North Carolina Museum of Art (NCMA), called Scott Avett: I N V I S I B L E. The exhibit launches with a viewing party on Friday (Oct. 11) before opening to the public on Saturday (Oct. 12) and running through Feb. 2, 2020. It highlights Avett's personal life, specifically, his relationship with his family.

"It's really about my direct relationship with the humans I see the most, which are my kids and my wife," he tells The Boot. "I've been obsessed with observing my wife go through motherhood, from the birthing of our first child and on through this. It's been a really dramatic and a really tough road at times, but also very joyful."

Avett shares that the body of work allowed him to explore different -- but just as important -- interests than the ones he tackles in his musical career. "The visuals that are provided through childhood, and motherhood, parenting, are enough for a life's work, really, as far as a figurative artist," he relates.

"I love making things. I love exploring, discovering -- so I follow that instinctually," he adds. "It is something that is a huge presence in my life, just as much as music."

Scott Avett: I N V I S I B L E features Avett's large-scale oil paintings. Tickets to the exhibit and related events are on sale now. For more information, visit NCArtMuseum.org.
