Bainbridge Auto Parts Store Destroyed by Fire

Authorities will be looking for the cause of a fire last night in Chenango County that destroyed an auto parts store and kept firefighters from over a half-dozen fire departments busy for hours overnight and into Tuesday morning, September 6.

Chenango County Emergency Services officials say the fire broke out at the AutoPlus store at 4 Front Street in Bainbridge shortly after 9 p.m. September 5.  There’s no word on who reported the blaze at the business.

No one was in the store as it was after hours and on a holiday.

Dispatchers with Chenango County say there was an incident report from the scene that the roof of the building had collapsed as firefighters battled the flames.

There were no injuries.

Firefighters from Bainbridge were joined at the scene by crews from Guilford, Mount Upton, Masonville, Coventry, Franklin, Trout Creek, Afton and Sydney.

Reports indicated while the fire was mainly out by midnight, crews remained on the scene looking for hot spots.

Authorities have been unable to provide an account of where the fire was believed to have originated or the exact time it was called in to the emergency communications center.  While there had been the report of the collapsed roof, indicating the building will be declared a total loss, there is no information as to how much of the structure remains or if any of the building may be salvageable.

The store is located on Front Street off Route 206 (West Main Street) and between the Susquehanna River and Route 7.  The area is fairly heavily traveled but there is no indication that there is any impact to traffic for the start of the shortened workweek.
