A man critically injured in an assault in Binghamton last month has died, leading to murder charges against five juveniles connected to the case.

According to the Binghamton Police Department, 45-year-old Peter J. Bennedum died Tuesday afternoon at a local hospital after spending over a week in critical condition.

Police Say The Assault Happened Near Carroll and Henry Streets

Investigators say Bennedum was assaulted on the evening of April 27, near Carroll and Henry Streets on Binghamton’s North Side.

Police said Bennedum, who was unhoused at the time of the attack, was hospitalized after the assault and remained under care until his death on May 5 at 1:21 p.m.

An autopsy was completed on Wednesday at United Health Services Wilson Medical Center. Authorities now say the investigation is officially being handled as a homicide.

Murder Charges Filed Against Five Juveniles

Bennedum’s death marked a significant turn in the case.

Police say four juveniles previously charged with attempted murder in the second degree now face upgraded charges of murder in the second degree, a Class A-1 felony under New York State law.

Authorities said those four juveniles are being held at a juvenile detention facility and are expected to appear in Broome County Court for arraignment on the new charges at a later date.
