NYS Holds First Annual Museum Week

From now through June 6 New York residents are encouraged to celebrate the first annual New York State Museum Week.

State senator James Seward says that during the period, more than 200 museums will offer special events, activities and promotions to give guests a sample of the exhibitions and programs offered by the state’s nearly 2,000 museums.

Seward says that museums are a very important part of our communities, especially in our area. Museum week provides the opportunity to rediscover our backyard treasures.

Oneonta Parking Garage Gets a Bath

Oneonta has announced that parts of the Main Street parking garage will be closed as of Sunday.

Workers will be washing the middle and lower levels on Sunday, the middle will be back open on Monday, but the lower level will remain closed until Tuesday.

The top floor will be open for parking during the whole time.

The project is part of an overall refurbishment of the facility going on this year.

Three Arrested in Chenango County

Another area alleged burglar arrested, this time in Chenango County.

Deputies there have arrested three Town of Norwich residents on 3rd degree burglary and 5th degree conspiracy following an investigation into a burglary complaint from a Town of Norwich victim.

Arrested were 24-year-old Nicholas A. Redd, 29-year-old Rodney H. MacLaury and 36-year-old John C. Leonard.

The three are accused of unlawfully entering a garage and stealing items. The three then exchanged the items for money at a local business.

Redd was arraigned in the Town of North Norwich and sent to the Chenango County correctional facility on $5,000 cash bail, Leonard was released into the custody of his employer, and MacLaury was already confined to the Chenango County correctional facility on a separate charge related to the same crime.

Norwich Y Announces Two Summer Programs

The Norwich Family YMCA has announced it is planning two short programs this summer to improve health and fitness.

Health and fitness director Shannon Garonski says the first program is the popular “better you challenge”.

“The better you challenge” is a 6-week program for the summer, which kicks off Monday June 4.

Those who would like to sign up for the better you challenge go to the Norwich Family YMCA on North Broad Street in Norwich and ask for Shannon, or just fill out the registration form.

The summer program is a condensed version of the 12-week program, and can be done on your time.

SUNY Oneonta Names Chambers Interim Police Chief

SUNY Oneonta has announced the appointment of a new police chief.

Daniel Chambers will be taking the place of Dr. Baron Ingersoll, who has stepped down from the position.

Chambers is currently the deputy chief at Binghamton University and has been serving for 26 years. He will serve Oneonta as an interim.

The SUCO police department is working on receiving state recognition as an accredited law enforcement agency under the leadership of Chief Ingersoll. That recognition is expected by the middle of this month.

Alumni Weekend for Oneonta, Delhi

This is alumni weekend for both SUNY Oneonta and Delhi.

The celebration lasts through Sunday with events at both locations and downtown Oneonta. There will be golf tournaments, barbeques, receptions and dances.

The events are open to the public; however, some activities require reservations and tickets.
